Youth Day at St Luke Church
On 16 June, Mafube First joined young people at St Luke Church to mark Youth Day. The day was set aside for two things: to honour the young people of 1976 who stood up and changed the course of this country, and to make sure that the youth growing up in Mafube today know that story and understand what it cost. Young people came in from across the municipality, with Frankfort, Tweeling, Cornelia and Villiers all represented in the church.
It turned into a full house and a joyful one. Choir after choir took their turn, and the building filled with gospel music, singing and dancing that carried through the day. Everyone was there, young and old, and the young people of Mafube were at the centre of it, which is exactly where they belonged. By any measure it was a successful Youth Day celebration, and it showed what Mafube looks like when its four towns come together in one room.
A message of support was delivered by Mafube First chairman Hans Pretorius. Mafube First thanks every choir, every organiser and every young person who made the day what it was. Days like this are not only about remembering. They are about the young people of Mafube seeing, plainly, that they are part of this community's future and that their voices count in it.
